A cultural landscape is the result of a continuous interaction between the surrounding natural landscape and culture. Meanings, symbols, and codes of culture are an integral part of it. This paper is a review of publications on current research over the past 20 years. The aim is to analyze the existing research practices, which are based on factual evidence and existing theoretical foundations, using an interdisciplinary approach, in order to come closer to a sufficiently holistic understanding of the coloristic semantics of the cultural landscape. Such a review and analysis of disparate studies allows for the first time the correlation of different types of cultural landscapes (urban, rural, gardens, and parks) and different types of signifier functions performed in them by color—signals, indices, iconic models, conventional signs or symbols, zero, or empty signs. The author analyzes the difference in the semantics of chromatic and achromatic colors and explores the landscape chromodynamics, namely, by creating the first-ever classification of the types and meanings of color foci of various durations—from days to decades. Color loci signs are continuously communicating in the cultural landscape, which is a field of constant “cultural explosion”, where traditional cultural meanings are transmitted and new meanings are generated. The author comes to the conclusion that color symbolism is part of the “landscape-as-text” containing certain information—“messages” of culture to itself. In these messages, color has sacral, temporal, and historical semantics, thus creating an extended semantic frame for the reproduction of cultural codes.

As an essential medium for the cultural narrative of architectural space, studying the cognitive transformation mechanisms of traditional ethnic decorative patterns is critical for their effective preservation and innovative application. This research focuses on typical decorative motifs found in She ethnic architectural heritage, systematically classifying them into five categories—animal, plant, human figure, totem, and geometric—based on symbolic themes, formal structure, and cultural function. Correspondingly, 20 sets of standardized black-and-white line drawing stimuli were developed for experimental use. Methodologically, this study utilized the EyeLink 1000 eye-tracking system to acquire real-time gaze metrics, including fixation duration and saccadic amplitude, as well as pupil dilation responses from participants engaged in a controlled pattern observation task. Immediately after observation, participants completed a semantic differential assessment using a five-point Likert scale. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal–Wallis tests, and Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons (α = 0.05). Attention allocation was further examined through heatmaps and gaze trajectory visualizations to provide comprehensive insight into visual engagement. Two principal findings were identified: first, male participants showed a predominant focus on holistic structural composition and cultural symbol representation, whereas female participants exhibited a processing bias towards fine details; second, concrete symbols imbued with historical significance elicited more pronounced emotional responses, while abstract geometric patterns necessitated formal reconstruction to enhance cognitive accessibility. These findings offer empirical support for gender-inclusive architectural design strategies and inform practical approaches for safeguarding cultural heritage within contemporary architectural environments. Consequently, modern reinterpretation of traditional decorative patterns should balance cultural narrative fidelity with functional adaptation, achieving inclusive expression through contextual reconstruction and interactive design strategies. Future research directions include expanding participant demographics to encompass cross-cultural cohorts and incorporating multimodal neuroimaging techniques to elucidate the underlying cognitive and affective mechanisms, thereby advancing the sustainable transmission and innovation of ethnic cultural heritage.
Color is a fundamental and pervasive element of human perception and a critical tool in various design disciplines. This review synthesizes the scientific literature on the psychological meaning of color within design contexts, encompassing graphic, web, interior, product, and marketing design. The study examines how color influences human emotion, cognition, and behavior, drawing upon theoretical frameworks ranging from biological and evolutionary perspectives to learned associations and context-dependent models, particularly the Color-in-Context theory. The methodology involved a systematic review of peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, and conference proceedings, focusing on empirical research employing experimental, correlational, survey, and qualitative methods. Key findings indicate that colors such as red, blue, green, yellow, black, and white evoke complex, often dualistic psychological responses (e.g., red signifies both passion and danger; blue conveys trust but also sadness). These responses are significantly moderated by factors including the specific design context, cultural background, individual differences (age, gender, personality, experience), and the interplay of color combinations, saturation, and brightness. Methodological limitations within the field, such as inadequate color specification and control, underpowered samples, and oversimplification of stimuli, are identified. Practical implications for design professionals highlight the need for nuanced, evidence-based color strategies that consider context, target audience, and brand identity, alongside ethical considerations regarding potential manipulation and accessibility. The review concludes that while color demonstrably affects psychological functioning, the field requires further research with improved methodological rigor, a greater focus on moderating variables and complex color interactions, and the development of mid-level theories to bridge the gap between fundamental research and effective design application.
The various colors and color combinations in an urban environment are perceived and experienced individually. The article indicates the important role of color in shaping architecture and urban space. The paper discusses the theories of color harmony as an aesthetic principle in architectural design. The results of the research have proven the significant role of color as an element of the composition of urban space affecting the observer. This translates into the importance of color in architectural design, taking into account the difficulty and ambiguity in predicting color aesthetics; the impact of color on humans; and its cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects. The information and conclusions obtained as a result of the literature studies and the results of the survey gave the basis for determining various color strategies in shaping architecture and the effects that we can achieve in urban space thanks to a well-thought-out, conscious use of colors. The research findings also indicate that it is necessary to supplement architectural education programs with broadly understood knowledge about color and its impact on humans. The implemented activities are a response to current ideas and directions in designing and teaching architectural design outlined and suggested as part of the New European Bauhaus initiative.

Today, diverse ideologies, thoughts, and beliefs exist in the world all of which try to transfer concepts and ideas to others using the indirect language of semantics. In this regard, architecture, especially the valuable architecture of Iran with wide application and permanent presence in human life has gained considerable attention. Iranian art has always been in coordination with the spirit of Islam and an indicator of its truth. Architecture is where meaning is represented in the formal, structural, and spatial aspects. Light and color are two important visual elements of formation and cognition of architectural works. Color does not manifest by itself unless it is seen through a design, when becomes the origin of work and intervenes in its sense of space. It should be considered that how the existence of light and color in the patterns has been effective in the environmental psychology and how the space is defined in terms of these two elements? And whether the sole use of light and color in the historical architecture was to represent meaning? The present study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to review and explain the semantic elements of light and color, their application and conceptual features in the historical architecture and hence examines these two distinct elements in the art and architecture of the past and tries to find their semantic features to the extent that have influenced the face and essence of modern architecture in the hope of providing useful insights for the modern architecture.
Historic and cultural heritage districts, as physical carriers of a city’s cultural identity, have become key issues in urban development. Architectural color, as a core visual element of district character, is an important symbol of regional identity recognition. However, further exploration is needed regarding how to integrate architectural color quantification metrics and evaluation techniques into the urban characteristics management framework. In this paper, taking Tianjin’s historic cultural heritage districts as a case study, street view data were utilized, and deep learning along with clustering analysis methods were employed to extract architectural colors. Based on the “point-line-surface” protection strategy, a multi-scale architectural color identification and evaluation method spanning “buildings-streets-districts” was established. This methodology enables the recognition of dominant building colors in heritage zones at the district scale and the assessment of street color harmony and richness at the street scale. By analyzing these two levels, this research interprets the role of architectural color as a visual attribute in defining urban character and enhancing urban distinctiveness. It provides technical support for refining urban characteristics management systems and achieving precise control over the preservation and development of distinctive urban features.

This study investigates the relationship between architectural colour and cultural identity in the ancient villages of Hebei Province, emphasising the role of colour in cultural heritage preservation and sustainable development. The research aims to (1) identify the dominant chromatic attributes of Hebei’s village architecture, (2) interpret their cultural and symbolic meanings, and (3) construct a colour model applicable to heritage conservation. A qualitative case study approach was employed across four representative villages, combining field surveys, semi-structured interviews, and digital colour analysis using the COLORO system. The findings reveal that the prevailing hues—ranging from red and yellow to ochre and brown—derive from local stone and timber, embodying values of stability, humility, and harmony with the environment. Decorative elements in bright red and gold signify celebration and community vitality, contrasting with the subdued architectural tones. Integrating these empirical and cultural insights, this study proposes the Colour Symbol System for Hebei Ancient Villages (CSSHAV)—a model that unites quantitative colour parameters with qualitative cultural interpretation. The CSSHAV serves as a practical framework for guiding colour conservation, policy development, and sustainable design in rural heritage contexts. The originality of this study lies in bridging scientific colour measurement with cultural semiotics, providing both theoretical advancement and actionable guidance for the preservation of regional chromatic identity. The findings identify increasing risks of colour homogenisation under the pressures of globalisation. Through the CSSHAV model, it proposes strategies to preserve Hebei’s traditional chromatic identity by integrating digital colour analysis with cultural interpretation. This balance between conservation and innovation contributes to sustaining both the aesthetic integrity and cultural vitality of ancient villages.
In response to the inadequate color-matching effectiveness and the difficulty of restoring color intentions in cultural heritage recreation, a Cultural Color Interactive Genetic Algorithm (Cultural Color IGA) is proposed, which combines a color network model and a color harmony prediction model. First, the role of the color network model in providing color genes for subsequent design is emphasized. Then, a dataset of 10,743 color and color rating data points is used to train 12 color harmony prediction models, with the most efficient stacking model selected to improve the efficiency of user evaluation of color schemes. A prototype system for color regeneration is built in Python, and a user interface is designed. The example analysis is conducted using the Yungang Grottoes as the source of color imagery, and image colorization is tested. Independent experiments compare the proposed method with traditional IGA in terms of average fitness, maximum fitness, and evaluation time. Fuzzy evaluation is applied to assess the effectiveness of cultural heritage color regeneration design. The results show that the trained stacking model achieves an accuracy of 65.52% in color harmony prediction, outperforming previous methods. Compared to the traditional IGA algorithm, Cultural Color IGA reduces the number of user evaluations by 67.4%, improves the average fitness by 22.68%, and increases the maximum fitness by approximately 13.37%. Regarding cultural heritage color regeneration effectiveness, 80.6% of respondents considered the generated color schemes to be of good or higher quality. This method not only generates design solutions with high cultural representation and color harmony but also improves the efficiency and sustainability of the design process by reducing trial numbers and manual evaluation workload. It demonstrates the potential of digital technologies in the protection and sustainable application of cultural heritage color, offering valuable references for the digital preservation and innovative design of cultural heritage.
