Abstract This research delves into the evolving sociocultural identity discourses within ethnic communities, particularly in the context of tourism revitalization. We used a qualitative case study approach to conduct 25 interviews in the Fengyang and Dailing She ethnic townships in Cangnan County, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. An in-depth iterative analysis of these interviews revealed three key findings: The symbolic significance of She ethnic townships, accentuated by tourism, necessitates the identity-building processes of She community members; the paradox of cultural essentialism and the ethnic-cultural commodification propels the evolution of She sociocultural identity; and empowering She people in community engagement can help sustain She sociocultural identity. These insights enrich the understanding of sociocultural dynamics in ethnic communities, highlighting the challenges and opportunities presented by commercializing cultural attractions through tourism and emphasizing the need for a balanced approach in preserving and leveraging ethnic minority cultural resources in tourism-based cultural industries.
She ethnic is one of old and mysterious ethnic groups who are scattering in the south-eastern mountain area in China. Owing to the outward impact, its indigenous She culture has been severely weakening. The paper aims to save and spread the precious cultural relic by discussing the present dilemma, spreading types and features faced by She ethnic culture. And systemic saving methods have been proposed to save the relic and promote its propagation:(1)Digital and web technology should be adopted to build up a She culture digital library and an overall digital propagation network.(2) Combined with the traditional propagation methods, new media forms such as Blogs, BBS, and mobile phones should be used to enlarge the propagation channels and enrich the propagation methods.(3)A positive propagation environment should be established based on the web technology in order to achieve the healthy propagation of She ethnic culture.
She's traditional costumes are both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, which do not only have a high aesthetic value, but also embody She's enduring beliefs and characters. However, with the economic development, social progress, especially technology updates and promotion of the traffic and media, the protective barrier of She's original cultural environment formed naturally by the geographical environment in the past have gradually disappeared. She's traditional culture, including costume culture, is rapidly weakening and lost. Based on the fieldwork of She ethnic minority areas in Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi Provinces of the East China, as well as the costumes and their cultural background information, this article analyzes three aspects of She's ecological concepts shown in costumes, as "Harmony between Man and Nature" - the Understanding of Environment, "Make the best use of things" - the understanding of the finiteness of natural resources, and ¡°Survival of the Fittest¡± - the Relationship between Ecosystem and Costume. She's costumes reflect a natural living environment, as well as a mode of the production and technical status of the She people. At the meantime, they reflect the national consciousness, the religious conceptions, the social attitudes, and aesthetic tendencies state of the She people, which embody the mutual relations and interactions of natural ecosystems and human cultural ecosystem.
She nationality is a local minority with strong ethnic characteristics. With the continuous progress of the times, the traditional cultural inheritance and development of the She nationality has been lagging behind. Starting from the traditional cultural inheritance and innovative development of the She nationality, this paper explores how to integrate the culture of She nationality into contemporary culture to truly realize the purpose of "going out". By using the methods of literature research, field research and comparative study, this paper proves that only by integrating and innovating with the contemporary culture can She traditional culture keep pace with the times. The traditional culture of She nationality is constantly enriched and active, and the world will understand the charm of traditional culture of She nationality.
In order to study how to integrate the embroidery craftsmanship in the wedding dress of the She ethnic group in Fujian with the fashion design courses, this article further analyzes the value of the embroidery craftsmanship of She ethnic group's wedding clothes by cutting its traditional embroidery patterns. Through field research, the author visited villages characterized with She ethnic group in eastern Fujian Province and sorted out the difficulties in the inheritance of embroidery in their wedding clothes. Based on the research results, a design case of specific fashion courses reforms is analyzed, and the feasibility of applying the intangible cultural heritage She ethnicity wedding clothing embroidery into the fashion design teaching is explored. The methods proposed in this article include the combination of embroidery technology and fashion design, improvement of fashion design modules, and innovative use of pattern technology. Finally, this article suggests that in the education and teaching of clothing design, traditional handicrafts should be integrated with fashion, and the accumulation of traditional cultural ideas and the expansion and promotion of skills should be emphasized in the curriculum, so that skills can be valued and inherited and innovated.
This study examines the musical forms, aesthetics, and socio-cultural functions of She ethnic music in eastern Fujian within the framework of local cultural governance. Using ethnomusicology, performance theory, and cultural ecology, the research draws on literature review, fieldwork, musical analysis, and comparative study to reveal a distinctive terminological system, diverse modal structures, and performance practices that connect music with labor, love, ritual, and narrative contexts. Findings highlight She music’s improvisational creativity, natural resonance, and emotional sincerity, alongside its openness to cross-cultural exchange with Han traditions. Contemporary challenges such as generational discontinuity, urban migration, and the influence of popular culture threaten its survival, but mechanisms of preservation—ranging from intangible cultural heritage designation and educational integration to stage adaptations and digital dissemination—demonstrate resilience. The study argues that sustainable transmission depends on participatory governance models that balance authenticity and innovation, showing that She music is both an artistic tradition and a governance concern, enriching scholarly understanding and informing cultural policy for heritage sustainability.

At present, intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is seriously threatened by modern civilization, taking Jingning She Township as an example, the existing protection and development model of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in Jingning She Township is difficult to fully play its role in practice, and the protection and development work of ICH in Jingning She Township has not achieved the desired effect. Therefore, this paper puts forward some strategies for the protection and development of ICH in Jingning Shexiang, and constructs the evaluation system of ICH protection and development indicators in Jingning Shexiang by using the index weight determination method, and calls the ICH protection and development model proposed in this paper the ICH protection development improvement model, and conducts experimental research on the ICH protection development improvement model from several aspects. The study showed that the respondents’ evaluation scores on the protection and preservation of ICH in She Township of Jingning were not high. The average feasibility evaluation score of the four experts on the improvement mode of ICH protection and development was 88.54, and the effectiveness evaluation score of the four experts on the improvement mode of ICH protection and development was 91.42. It shows that there is still a great room for improvement in the protection and development of ICH in She township of Jingning, and the improvement mode of ICH protection and development has obvious application demand and certain effectiveness. In the future, the protection and development of ICH in Jingning She Township should focus on the following aspects: enhancing the cultural self-confidence and cultural consciousness of the She people; Continuously implement the overall protection policy; Strengthen ICH education and cultivate appropriate inheritors of ICH; Properly develop ICH tourism.
This study evaluates the inheritance of She ethnic sports intangible cultural heritage using a fuzzy comprehensive assessment approach to identify key preservation factors and their interrelationships. The research employs a mixed-methods design combining Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) weighting, regression analysis, and fuzzy logic evaluation to assess five primary dimensions: inheritor factors, activity effectiveness, educational investment, facility conditions, and social acceptance. Findings reveal a balanced but suboptimal preservation status, with educational resources emerging as the strongest predictor and social acceptance as the most challenging dimension. Secondary analysis highlights critical sub-factors, including inheritor participation and resource utilization efficiency, while interaction effects demonstrate significant synergies between education and activity implementation. The results align with prior cultural heritage research while providing novel quantitative insights specific to She ethnic sports, confirming that successful preservation requires integrated strategies addressing all dimensions, with particular emphasis on education-activity linkages. The study contributes methodologically by demonstrating fuzzy logic's effectiveness in handling cultural heritage complexity and offers practical implications for policymakers: prioritizing participatory educational programs, optimizing resource use over mere funding increases, and fostering community engagement to convert awareness into active preservation. These findings advance both theoretical understanding and practical approaches to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in minority communities.
The scientific management and protection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) cannot be separated from continuous innovation and the public’s active participation. The evolution of the value of local cultural heritage can help prevent the loss of valuable cultural identity and cultural heritage. This study is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the innovative practice of heritage education in colleges and universities is explored through the case studies of “She costumes culture” and “Quanzhou traditional embroidery skills”. In the second stage, a questionnaire survey on creative products and activities of technical, intangible cultural heritage is conducted. SPSS and AMOS are used for statistical analysis of the questionnaire results, and a total of 26 indicators are obtained, as well as six dimensions: heritage education, the local value of heritage, cultural participation, cultural identity, cultural and tourism integration, and cultural reflection. Among these are a covariant relationship between cultural tourism integration and heritage education, which shows that they play an equally significant role. Sustainable ICH education requires the government and local communities to make corresponding adjustments upon clarifying their own roles and functions in preserving cultural heritage. Ultimately, practical innovation in ICH requires more citizens to change their inherited cultural values. In particular, inheritors achieve sustainable protection of ICH through self-management.
