Traditional regression or structural equation modeling often falls short in revealing the complex dynamic interactions among multiple variables. In contrast, network analysis not only conceptualizes college students’short video addiction, self-control, and emotional symptoms as interacting nodes, but also visually uncovers core symptoms and bridging mechanisms that are elusive to conventional approaches. Employing this method, the present study aims to elucidate the interactive mechanisms among college students’ short video addiction, self-control, and emotional symptoms, thereby providing finer-grained empirical evidence for developing targeted intervention strategies. This study employs network analysis to explore the relationships among short video addiction, self-control, and emotional symptoms in college students, aiming to provide empirical evidence for developing targeted interventions. A cross-sectional design was adopted, with convenience sampling used to recruit participants from a medical university. A total of 5,754 valid questionnaires were collected. Measurement tools included the Short Video Addiction Scale for College Students, the Brief Self-Control Scale, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Regularized partial correlation networks were constructed using the “qgraph” and “bootnet” packages in R, and node centrality along with network stability were evaluated. The study revealed a complex interactive structure among short video addiction, self-control, and emotional symptoms. Statistically, “Uncontrollability” within short video addiction and “Self-discipline” within self-control demonstrated high centrality. The study reveals a complex interactive structure among short video addiction, self-control, and emotional symptoms. Statistically, “Uncontrollability” within short video addiction and “Self-discipline” within self-control demonstrated high centrality. In practical terms, the findings suggest that enhancing self-discipline may serve as an effective entry point for intervening in addictive short video use behaviors.

Abstract Background and aims We aimed to systematically identify, evaluate and summarize the research on adolescent emotion dysregulation and problematic technology use. We critically appraise strengths and limitations and provide recommendations for future research. Methods We followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and conducted a systematic review of published original reports on adolescent emotion dysregulation and problematic technology use published until March 1, 2022. A thorough search preceded the selection of studies matching prespecified criteria. Strengths and limitations of selected studies, regarding design and reporting, were identified based on current best practices. Results 39 studies met inclusion criteria. All of these studies provided on the relationship between adolescent emotion dysregulation and problematic technology use severity based on self-report data. Discussion There was a positive correlation between adolescent emotion dysregulation and the severity of problematic technology use. Beyond this, other variables (such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, etc.) were also closely related to emotion dysregulation and problematic technology use. Such studies are of importance to better understand cause-effect relations regarding both variables.
Problematic use of short video (PUSV) refers to a psychological dependency on short‐video applications, characterized by an intense attachment and inability to control usage, resulting in typical addiction symptoms. Although PUSV shares similarities with substance addiction, its clinical presentation exhibits significant differences. Notably, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM‐5), and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD‐11), have not yet officially classified PUSV as an addiction disorder. However, the profound impact of short‐video platforms on individuals' physical, mental and daily lives necessitates attention to PUSV. To enable more in‐depth and standardized research on this issue, synthesizing and organizing existing studies on its theoretical foundations and mechanisms is crucial. This paper aims to integrate and evaluate existing research on PUSV from four perspectives: qualitative analysis, underlying mechanisms, negative effects and measurement tools, providing a more systematic understanding and approach to this emerging issue.
Background Emotion dysregulation, boredom, and problematic social media use are well-known vulnerability factors for psychopathology during adolescence; nevertheless, the interplay between these factors remains underinvestigated in the literature. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study aimed to explore the mediating role of boredom and problematic social media use in the relations between emotion dysregulation and both internalizing and externalizing problems in a non-clinical group of Italian adolescents. Method 721 students (64.6% girls; M _age = 15.49 years ± 1.82) were involved and completed self-report tools assessing emotion dysregulation, boredom, problematic social media use, and psychopathological symptoms. Path analysis was used to test whether boredom and problematic social media use mediated the relation between emotion dysregulation and psychopathology, distinguishing between internalizing and externalizing problems. Results Path models showed that emotion dysregulation predicted both internalizing and externalizing problems, as well as boredom and problematic social media use. Importantly, boredom mediated the associations between emotion dysregulation and both psychopathological dimensions, while problematic social media use mediated only the relation with externalizing problems. Conclusions Our results highlight that the influence of emotion dysregulation on psychopathology can manifest through different paths, leading to specific symptomatology based on interactions between various variables. In particular, boredom seems to be a transdiagnostic factor for psychopathology in adolescence, whereas problematic social media use would be a dimension-specific factor. The practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract Background Social media use is widespread among minors. Already children and adolescents can be affected by a problematic social media use (PSMU). Deficits in emotion regulation are becoming increasingly important as an explanation for psychological strain. In the present study, associations between different facets of emotion regulation and PSMU in childhood and adolescence were investigated for the first time. Methods In a representative sample of 1,221 10- to 17-year-olds, standardized questionnaires were used to survey PSMU, emotion regulation, procrastination, and perceived stress. We used correlation and multivariable regression analyses to determine the associations. Results Bivariate statistically significant relations were found between PSMU and lower age, more pronounced problems in all six facets of emotion regulation, procrastination, and stress. In the multivariable regression, PSMU was associated with lower age, stronger impulse control difficulties, stronger difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior, stronger procrastination and higher perceived stress (Corrected R2 = 0.26). Conclusion For the first time, the importance of emotion regulation (especially difficulties in impulse control and goal-oriented behavior), procrastination and perceived stress for PSMU in childhood and adolescence was observed. In prevention measures, deficits in emotion regulation or coping strategies and dealing with procrastination could be addressed.
Emotion regulation has been proposed as a mechanism for the development of problematic smartphone use. In addition to examining the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and problematic smartphone use, the current study sought to be the first to examine the relationship between subscales of emotion regulation difficulties and problematic smartphone use. It also sought to determine whether emotion regulation difficulties provide incremental prediction of problematic smartphone use over and above personality. Participants were 692 Australian university students (81% female; age in years M = 25.23, SD = 7.48). They completed a measure of problematic smartphone use, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and a measure of Big Five personality (IPIP 120). Overall emotion regulation difficulties (r = 0.40) and impulse control difficulties (r = 0.42) were moderately associated with problematic smartphone use, as were the Big Five factors of neuroticism (r = 0.43) and conscientiousness (r = −0.38). Although emotion regulation difficulties predicted problematic smartphone use, they did not provide incremental prediction over and above the Big Five. Findings indicate that personality is a robust predictor of problematic smartphone use. Emotion regulation difficulties, such as impulsivity, offer insights into the specific ways that personality is expressed in problematic smartphone use.
Background Short video addiction (SVA) among college students is influenced by personality traits, namely, neuroticism and agreeableness. However, the role of depression and anxiety as mediators remains unclear. Objective This study aims to explore the mediating role of comorbid depression and anxiety in the relationship between different dimensions of university students’ personalities and SVA. Methods The SPSS PROCESS was utilized to analyze data from 804 university students across seven universities in China. Results The findings show that neuroticism, agreeableness, and extraversion in the personalities of Chinese university students are all significantly linked to SVA; neuroticism and agreeableness in the personalities of university students have a greater impact on SVA; both neuroticism and agreeableness can first induce depression and then lead to anxiety and SVA, whereas only agreeableness can first lead to anxiety and then result in depression and SVA. Conclusion This study uncovers the intricate relationship between personality traits and SVA among college students, emphasizing depression and anxiety as critical chain mediators in this relationship. It reveals that neuroticism and agreeableness significantly influence SVA through specific pathways involving depression and anxiety, indicating that interventions targeting these traits are essential.
BACKGROUND Short-form video applications have spread rapidly and gained popularity among adolescents for their interactivity, sociality, and personalization. However, excessive and uncontrolled use has also caused some adolescents to develop short-form video addiction (SFVA). Although parental phubbing has been shown to be a risk factor for SFVA in adolescents, its intermediate mechanisms, particularly the emotional mediation mechanisms, remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationships among parental phubbing, SFVA, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and neuroticism in adolescents. METHODS Adolescents aged 13-19 (N = 5785) were recruited from Shandong Province, China, as participants in 2023. Participants were asked to complete five self-report questionnaires, including the Parental Phubbing Behavior Questionnaire (PPBQ), Short-Form Video Addiction (SFVA) Scale, The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD20), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) Scale, and Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory (Brief Version) (CBF-PI-B). RESULTS The results indicate that the influence of parental phubbing on short-form video addiction among adolescents is mediated by symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, neuroticism moderates the association between parental phubbing and symptoms of depression and anxiety. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design limits causal inferences. Reliance on self-report scales. CONCLUSIONS These findings contribute to a better understanding of the systemic impact mechanisms of negative family interactions on SFVA. Moreover, prevention and intervention strategies targeting high neuroticism and symptoms of depression and anxiety may help prevent the developmental pathway from parental phubbing to SFVA.

The present study explores the underlying mechanism of the relationship between college students’ social anxiety and mobile phone addiction. Adopting college students’ social anxiety scale, regulatory emotional self-efficacy scale, subjective well-being scale and mobile phone addiction scale, this research tested valid samples of 680 Chinese college students. The results indicated that social anxiety exerted a significant and positive impact on mobile phone addiction. Regulatory emotional self-efficacy played a partial mediating role between social anxiety and mobile phone addiction. Subjective well-being also played a partial mediating role between social anxiety and mobile phone addiction. Moreover, both regulatory emotional self-efficacy and subjective well-being were found to play a chain mediating role between social anxiety and mobile phone addiction. The study provides valuable insights into the impact of college students’ social anxiety on mobile phone addiction.
Previous researches indicated that emotional regulation can be associated with depression and anxiety, which may be an important mediating factor between emotional regulation and internet addiction. However, the mechanism between these associations has received little attention and it is still unclear. This study has examined 716 Chinese adolescents, 341 were males (47.6%), aged 13 to 18(Mean = 14.58, SD = 1.50), using a cross-sectional survey involving Young's Diagnostic Questionnaire for Internet Addiction, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the seven-item Generalized Anxiety (GAD-7) scale, and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Correlation analysis, multiple-group analysis and structural equation modeling were carried out in SPSS Statistics version 23 (IBM, Armonk, NY) and AMOS version 21. Cognitive reappraisal had a significantly negative direct effect on Internet addiction (β = −0.118, p < 0.05). Furthermore, negative emotions mediated the relationships between expression suppression and Internet addiction [β = 0.149, 95% CI = (0.099, 0.212)] and the relationship between cognitive reappraisal and Internet addiction [β = −0.101, 95% CI = (−0.147, −0.065)]. The differences in the structure path coefficients for different development stages demonstrated that recognitive reappraisal showed more protective roles for negative emotion (p < 0.01), and negative emotion also predict Internet addiction more effectively in high school students (p < 0.001). However, cognitive reappraisal directly predicted negative Internet addiction in junior high school students. Therefore, the intervention on adolescents for internet addiction should not only focus on emotional regulation and negative emotion, but also development stages of adolescents.
