The fashion industry is rapidly transitioning toward hyper-personalized products, yet traditional customization often suffers from long sampling cycles, fragmented cultural translation, and inconsistent visual outcomes. Meanwhile, generative AI and 3D garment simulation provide new capabilities for fast ideation and virtual prototyping, but they also introduce governance risks (e.g., cultural misrepresentation, visual drift, IP ambiguity, and unstable quality across iterations). This paper proposes a Digital-Intelligent Customization Workflow (DICW) that integrates (1) cultural research and rule-based knowledge structuring, (2) knowledge-graph–supported design constraints, (3) AI-assisted pattern/color generation, and (4) Style3D/CLO-class 3D virtual fitting for rapid iteration, forming a closed loop from concept to deliverable output. We validate DICW through a process-based case study of a “Guochao” apparel project that emphasizes sustainable color–pattern innovation and structural transformation from 2D patchwork logic to 3D garment architecture. The case documents each stage from cultural motif extraction to garment module decomposition, AI refinement, virtual drape verification, and final presentation outputs, while mapping major risks and mitigation strategies. Results indicate that combining protocolized constraints with AI generation reduces rework, improves cross-variant consistency, and strengthens compliance-oriented governance for cultural design innovation.

The postponed manufacturing theory, methods, cases, and implementation strategy in the apparel industry field have been explained systematically in order to provide new ideas and references for the apparel enterprises which are in the transformation and upgrading process to obtain core competitiveness and to open up new production business model.
This study explores why resource-constrained small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries and weak institutional contexts embrace corporate sustainability (CS), focusing on a Sri Lankan apparel firm that institutionalized CS, despite systemic challenges. Drawing on institutional, resilience, and identity framing theories, the study adopts an exploratory single-case design to examine how internal leadership decisions interact with external pressures and are interpreted and embedded through leadership framing. The findings question the common belief that CS in the Global South is driven by external forces, symbolic actions, or structural limits. Instead, sustainability is shown as a moral and risk-management-oriented survival strategy, shaped by a strong underdog identity and close-knit operations. An emergent conceptual framework highlights how SMEs translate buyer demands and local constraints into embedded practices, through purpose-driven adaptation. It offers fresh insights into how SMEs in low-capacity and weak institutional environments lead sustainability efforts and suggests the need for context-aware policy support.

ABSTRACT Women entrepreneurship research in the developing world relies on theoretical perspectives derived elsewhere. Hence, understanding the original business-development approaches adopted by women entrepreneurs in developing economies remains elusive. Accordingly, we collected and analyzed rich data generated through 31 in-depth interviews and artifacts of Nigerian women entrepreneurs in the garment manufacturing business. Our analysis revealed distinct constructs that account for their business-development activities. It shows money (access and utilization), market (customer intelligence), and management (nonformal education and experience) as crucial enterprise development components in women entrepreneurship. Motherhood (household responsibilities), meso- and macro-environments (socioeconomic and cultural factors) not only affected business development but also inhibited women entrepreneurs’ access and utilization of money, management, and markets and shaped their business development actions. Theoretical and practical implications for entrepreneurship research and policy development initiatives in the developing world are offered.
Although the extant research in entrepreneurial innovation shows how organizational challenges could enact such innovations, the relationship between organizational challenges and organizational innovation under the small and medium enterprise (SME) context requires attention. Especially considering that SMEs face supply chain challenges, we need to know whether such challenges consistently enact supply chain innovations. Moreover, although those innovations can address the immediate SME challenges, extant research does not capture the life cycle of the innovations efficiently. To find an answer to this theoretical quest, we conduct participatory case research at Saha Textile, India. The founder of Saha Textile started his journey as a small garment shop owner in a Bazar. Within two decades, Saha Textile became one of the most prominent vertically integrated organizations in the Indian textile sector. Our reflexive process study reveals that the organization faced multiple survival threats throughout its journey. The uniqueness of the organizational crisis enacted sensemaking in the organization. The organization looked at unusual and unconventional resources within its access and creatively converted those into valuable resources to address the challenges. If successful with the creative attempts in addressing the pressing challenges—the organization further strengthened those resources into core competence. Over time, the organizational learning in converting crisis to core competencies through creative utilization of resources became rational heuristics and acted as a (higher-order) dynamic capability. Our inductive theorization makes a significant academic contribution as it proposes a generalizable dynamic capability process model of converting crisis into innovation and capitalizing such innovations as a core competence. Our research points out the possibility of standardizing and leveraging innovations-as-crisis-responses as core competence towards a sustainable competitive advantage for practice.
