Format validation recognizes only identifier structure. Registered metadata is still required to verify the publication.

Suffix: Assigned by the registrant; its character structure varies by publisher.
What to Verify After a DOI Resolves
This detects genuine DOIs attached to the wrong citation as well as transcription errors.
- The title substantially matches the title in your reference.
- The first author and author order have not been mixed with another paper.
- The journal, conference, or repository name matches.
- The year, volume, issue, pages, or article number matches.
- The publication type matches how the source is described in your text.
- Open the abstract or full text and confirm that it supports the cited claim.
What If the DOI Does Not Open or Cannot Be Found?
Distinguish formatting errors, broken destinations, unregistered works, and access restrictions.
- Remove a trailing period, brackets, and spaces introduced during copying.
- Search the complete identifier in Crossref or on the publisher site to retrieve metadata.
- A paywalled destination does not mean the DOI is invalid; look for an open-access version separately.
- If no record exists, search by title, author, and year; never invent a DOI.
