Frequently Asked Questions
How should reference entries be ordered?
GB/T 7714's numeric system orders entries by their first appearance in the text. Author–date systems, APA, and MLA order them alphabetically by the first author's surname. Follow the institution's or journal's instructions.
How do I list more than three authors?
GB/T 7714 lists the first three followed by et al. APA 7 lists all authors up to 20; for 21 or more, list the first 19, an ellipsis, and the final author. MLA uses the first author plus et al. for three or more.
Does a webpage citation always need an access date?
GB/T 7714 includes both the publication or update date in parentheses and the access date in brackets. APA adds a retrieval date only for content designed to change, while MLA recommends an access date when no publication date is available.
How should punctuation work when Chinese and English references are mixed?
Output entries according to the institutional, journal, or citation-style file rather than replacing punctuation based on language. Check author names, source-type markers, volume and issue, and pages after combining the lists.
